Finally Doing Something for Herself

It took Joy Jensen until she was a grandmother to realize she needed to start taking care of herself. "I love my family, but, with the birth of my grandson, I realized my daughter had her own life and I needed to do things for myself." The first thing Joy did was enroll at Colorado Tech Online.

"My family and friends have always called me a perpetual student. Even though I had never gotten my college degree, I was always taking classes and courses that were interesting to me. I finally decided it was time to finish what I had started."

I would never have believed I could get two Master's degrees in such a short amount of time until I enrolled at Colorado Tech Online. It is almost as if I am getting two degrees for the price of one!— Joy Jensen, School of Business

Over the years Joy was casually taking classes she had several jobs pass her by because she didn't have her degree. "I would have the experience and knowledge for higher-paying jobs, but I didn't have one little piece of paper the jobs would require so I couldn't even apply."

That all changed—drastically—earlier this year. Joy graduated from Colorado Tech Online with not just one, but two Bachelor's Degrees. She was torn between majoring in Management and Human Resources and then found out she could major in both by taking only an additional four classes. Joy went for it and graduated with her BSBA in Management in March and then another Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources Management in June. Since then, she has had a substantial number of job offers, but, because she can now afford to be picky as she is in such high demand, Joy is holding out for the perfect job.

While getting her degrees, Joy worked as a teacher's assistant in a school for troubled junior and high school students. She plans on continuing in this job—although she is now also eligible to get her substitute teacher's license—until a management position in which she can influence these kids' education and the resources available to them presents itself. "If I can do the job that I truly want to and make enough money to live on, that will be my most rewarding professional accomplishment."

Joy's students and family are already tremendously proud of her however. Most of her students never get one college degree, much less two, and Joy is the only one of her eight siblings to graduate from college. "It felt so good to have accomplished this. The look in Mom and Dad's eyes has meant more to me than anything in the world."
